Gustav hammers Baton Rouge

Well, we probably would have been better to stay in New Orleans on this one, although you never know, but it hit Baton Rouge and how! This is probably one of the worst hurricanes Baton Rouge has seen.

We lost power about 12 noon. The winds really started picking up about 2pm around 90 miles a hour gusts.

I am including a video. It starts with a very large tree in my dad's backyard which shortly after fell onto the boat you see. The action starts at the 24 second mark when our across the street neighbor actually caught video of the tree falling. A little later we hopped in the car and went to check out a neighbor's house who had a tree fall on their car. There were fallen trees all across the roads.

We are just so lucky that tree didn't fall on the house. Seems like the worst is over, but most likely no electricity for a few days. We will most likely head back to NOLA when they allow it with generator in tow. Thank God for generators!

Thanks again for all your prayers and well wishes. What a Labor Day weekend!

Sara, it's so sad to see this!!! I'm glad you all sound OK - even laughing at times in the video.

Hoping repairs and your return home go smoothly.

Thanks for the video, i'm in Australia and i have an internet friend in Baton Rouge so i'm trying to determine what he went through and if he's ok.

Hopefully just a bit of minor damage from trees and his family is ok.

All the best.

Oh no Daddy's boat! thank god it didn't fall on the house. How did those tiny pieces of plywood hold up?

We are getting some of Gustav up here in Monroe, too. Heard my house is OK in Metairie, though. YAY! Can't wait to get home!

We lived in New Orleans for a few years before Katrina. I'll never forget the experience of my first rain "storm"--the water was up to the car door after a 15 minute shower and I didn't know what to do! Quite a difference from CT. Good luck and stay safe!

I'm glad to hear you and your family are safe. I lived in Baton Rouge for about a year in the mid-80's but we didn't have a hurricane blow through. What a monster Gustav was!

My friend told me just now that all commercial flights are suspended in Baton Rouge. Weather is still bad down there.

Stay strong Baton Rouge!

Wow! That tree is huge! OMG, good thing it was the boat and not the house.
